Veien til Golf: what the beginner course is actually like

In Norway, the road to a green card runs through Veien til Golf ("the road to golf") — a beginner course every new golfer takes before playing freely on full-size courses. If you've just signed up, or you're hesitating because you don't know what's behind the door, here's what it's actually like.

What the course is for

Not to make you good — to make you safe, aware and welcome. The bar is deliberately low: swing well enough to move the ball, know the handful of rules that matter, and understand the etiquette that keeps a course flowing. Clubs run it over a weekend or a few evenings, and it typically costs a couple of thousand kroner, often with a starter membership bundled in.

The three parts

• Theory. The core rules and etiquette — the same ground our pocket guide covers: relief drops, out of bounds, pace of play, safety. Finishes with a short multiple-choice quiz. (Half the questions people google mid-quiz are answered in our quiz explainer — understand them instead.)
• Practice. Range and short-game sessions with an instructor: grip, setup, chipping, putting. Nobody expects a pretty swing; they expect effort.
• On-course play. A few accompanied holes where the etiquette becomes real: where to stand, when to play, how to keep pace.

What people worry about (needlessly)

• "Everyone will be better than me." The course exists because everyone starts from zero. Your group will be nurses, teenagers and retirees whiffing the ball just like you.
• "The quiz is hard." It's short, open-book in spirit, and retakeable. If you understand free drops and pace of play, you're most of the way there.
• "I need my own clubs first." No — clubs lend you a set. Come in trainers and comfortable clothes.

The moment you pass

You get handicap 54 and full playing rights.
